How To Make Money While Staying Home

How To Make Money While Staying Home

Have you ever rolled out of bed, stumbled down the stairs, and looked around at your messy house filled with toys that you didn’t feel like putting away last night, knowing it’s just another day and you probably still won’t get the toys put away?  Besides never getting the toys put away, you still have to get the lunches made and the piano practice done and on and on and on and on…all within the next hour before you get kids off to school?

I remember when I had this exact morning about 3 years ago, and I remember thinking – “gosh, this sure is fun – said no mom – ever.”  But then my thoughts jumped to the fact that already two of my kids are in school all day and I only have one still at home with me.  In a few years he will be at school all day as well – and once he is, then WHAT??  What would I do with my time all day long?  Yes, for the first week I will eat bon bons and watch soaps all day.  Actually, I don’t like either of those things, so I probably won’t do that.   The quiet will be nice – but only for a couple days.  I know myself well enough to know that I’ll go nuts if I don’t find something to keep me slightly stressed and busy.  That’s how I roll – I function so much better on the edge of panic.  It’s also how I get a lot done – I fill my days from sun up, to sun down with some type of work, and I tend to be very effective.  If I don’t have something to keep me actively busy and full of purpose, I will flounder.

Since I know all of this about myself, and because I’m a planner, 3 years ago I started looking for things I could do to keep busy when all three kids will be in school full time.  If you have read my blog for awhile now, you know I’m an entrepreneur5MM_Cover_295x448 at heart,  so naturally, I began to think about business ideas and ways that I could earn and save money from home.  After a lot of research and prayer, about a year ago I started actively working on a new business that I plan to work on full time when all three kids are in school, and I’m so excited!

If you find yourself in the same place I did, wondering what you’ll do once kids are in school full time and wanting to make or save some money, then here are some ideas for you.  I’ve also written a really great eBook, 5 Money-Making Ideas for Stay-At-Home-Moms, that you can download FREE now that explains many of these ideas and even a few more in detail.

  • Shop at thrift and consignment stores.  Don’t freak out – you really can find some amazing deals at thrift stores for your family and you can save a lot of money.  Especially if you shop on their 50% off days!  Yes, it takes some work to really look for stuff, and you tend to deal with long lines, but you can find some really great deals!  Some of the best deals I’ve found have been on sporting equipment for the kids (especially on cleats) and maternity clothes.
  • Sell your stuff at consignment stores.  Not only should you shop at consignment stores, but you can sell your used stuff at them as well!  I know some mommies who sell enough of their own stuff that they can then use their store credit to turn around and buy whatever they need, and are never7BigMistakes_Cover_295x448 really paying out of pocket for clothing!
  • Use coupons every time you shop.  Join a coupon group where you can share deals and swap coupons.  Get your kids involved and have them help you clip coupons!  If you get a system down, you can use coupons every week, save money, and not have it take up too much of your time.  I explain a lot more about how to do this in another eBook I’ve written, 7 Biggest Mistakes Couponers Make – you might want to download that one as well. :)
  • Have a garage sale.  We all know this is a lot of work, but you can make quick money by having a garage sale!
  • Start your own business!  This is my favorite idea of all – I love to SAVE money, but I also love business and I personally want to earn money.  The best way I know to earn money from home is to start a network marketing business.  There are so many of them to choose from with great products like jewelry, bags, makeup, energy drinks, etc!  It’s all about finding one that fits your lifestyle and has the potential to earn the amount of income you are looking for.  Some people just want the free stuff that you get from having a few parties, some people want to earn enough money to make the car payment, and some people want to find a business that replaces their spouse’s income.  I was looking for a serious business model, with a company that had ground-breaking products that no one else offered, and that had the income potential to replace my spouse’s income and bring him back home to work with me in business again.  I’m so happy because I’ve found it!

Download my eBook for more ideas on how to save and earn money from home – it is possible!  I’d love to hear your ideas on how you save your family money or how you make money at home!  Please share them in the comments below!  Hugs!

I LOVE Brownies

I LOVE Brownies

chocolate-dessert-brownies-cakeIt’s no secret, I love brownies.  I mean, I LOVE them.  A lot.  I love all different shapes, colors, flavors, it doesn’t really matter actually, if it’s a brownie I’ll try them, and most likely LOVE them!  Most of my friends know this about me.  In fact, I think the perfect dinner is pizza and brownies.  YUMMY!  I love them so much that I tend to remember big life events around if there were brownies included.  Perfect example – when my first son, Coen, was born I remember the day that my big brother met him for the very first time.  While Ryan held him, we ate these amazing, peppermint brownies that my mom makes for me on very special occasions.  Silly, I know – but that special life event was punctuated in my brain by those brownies.

Yes, I’ve been told that I’m slightly crazy.  I have fond memories of childhood that include making brownies with my mom in our ‘all things cow’ kitchen, and I would lick more of the batter than I was allowed.  Once they were cooked I would sneak a bite every chance I got when my mom wasn’t looking!  I really do love brownies, and I love that my closest family and friends know just how much I love them.  In fact, a few of them get a kick out surprising me with a unique flavor that they either made or found somewhere.

Since I love brownies so much, I decided that it’s about time I show some of my most favorite recipes that I’ve found, tried, or collected on Pinterest.  I plan to start featuring a great recipe that I’ve tried myself, but for now, here is my Pinterest board full of lots of tantalizing brownie recipes for all you brownie lovers out there!  Please share any links you have to your favorite brownie recipes – there is always room for more on my board!  Enjoy!

Katrina’s Coupon Tip #12 – Don’t Stock Up Too Much

Katrina’s Coupon Tip #12 – Don’t Stock Up Too Much

CT12_DontStockUpAre you stocking up so much that you are bursting at the seams and your kids’ closets are now full of toilet paper instead of clothes?  It’s really easy to get in the mindset of making sure you don’t let any coupons go to waste.  This can be very dangerous.

If you stock up a bunch on an item without paying close attention to the expiration you can get more excited about the money you are saving and end up buying a lot more of the product than you can actually use before it expires.  You may find yourself throwing food away that has expired and then you realize that the great deal you thought you found for that product is actually not really that great of a deal.

A perfect example is condiments.  One time I came across a great sale on Ranch dressing, we use a lot of it, so I purchased 8 bottles of it with my coupons and didn’t pay attention to the expiration date.  I ended up throwing away 4 bottles because they expired before we were able to use them all.  This is very easy to do with all sorts of products, so just make sure that you can use or can give away all the products you purchase that have a short expiration.

Katrina’s Budgeting 101

Katrina’s Budgeting 101

Budgeting101I’m laughing out loud at myself right now.  That title, ‘Katrina’s Budgeting 101’ sort of cracks me up – ok, it REALLY cracks me up!  I feel like I missed the “budget” train my entire childhood, either I wasn’t paying attention all the times my parents tried to talk to me about it or I’m just crazy.  I do remember being a natural ‘saver’,’ when I would get my allowance, I would save it, and save it, and save it.  Then my big brother, whom I thought walked on water, would somehow talk me into going to the local grocery store and using it all to buy “us” candy (which he would proceed to eat most of).  He was a smart big brother, using his money-saving little sister to enjoy an afternoon snack.  I still love you though, Ry-fry (my nickname I called my big bro – Ryan).

I do remember getting my first checking account when I was around 14.  I had a job working with my dad at Promise Keepers, I worked in the mail room (was a GREAT first job) and had so much fun!  There was a bank very close to the office and all a sudden I remember my mom and dad deciding I needed a checking account and a checkbook, and needed to start balancing that checkbook.  To this day, I still have the hardest time balancing a checkbook, thankfully, Cassidy does this for us now.  Anyone else struggle with that?  I really hope I’m not alone on this one…

As I grew up, my dad was always there to fall back on when I messed up with my saving or with my bills and I guess I just assumed that when I got married that my husband would just do the same thing.  I never really thought there was too much to the whole money thing, I just figured someone else would take care of it for me, so why should I have to learn too much about where my money goes?  As I write this I can’t believe how naïve I was!  Ohmygoodness!!!!!

Fast forward a few years and I’ve met Cassidy, the man of my dreams and we are getting married.  We didn’t talk very much about money when we were dating – I assumed he had a lot more money than he really did, after all, he was a college graduate, he had an established career and job with a big company, he drove a very nice car and he also has just envelopesystempurchased his first house (a brand new one that was not huge, but very nice for a first home).  Appearances are not always reality for sure.  While he was very well off for a guy his age, he did have quite a bit of debt from school, his fancy car, and his house.

At that time, first of all, I didn’t care, and second of all, I thought everyone had debt.  As a wedding present, my adopted set of grandparents (long story – but they “adopted” me and loved on me like real grandparents do) gave us Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University kit and a free tickets to a 12 week class to learn all about it.  Although I was not super excited about this gift at all, I loved the KitchenAid Stand Mixer we received much more, we agreed to attend the class.  12 weeks later our lives were radically changed!  We dove in head first, worked extra jobs and a year later we managed to pay off all of our $90,000 in debt and have paid cash and lived debt free ever since.  I’m talking 13 years later, we are still debt free, we use the envelope system for our cash and expenditures, we have a monthly ‘budget committee meeting’ where we both sit down together and work on that’s month’s budget and we LOVE it!

CassKatDave Ramsey says that with most couples, there is usually one free spirit and one nerd.  I’m the free spirit for sure!  I tend to watch a lot of what Cassidy is doing to put together our spreadsheet for the monthly budget, but I’m still present and helping.  Thank goodness I have Cassidy, because if it was just me I know for sure that I would never make a real budget.  I don’t love having to take the time each month to sit down and work on the budget, but I’m always glad we did.  It’s a freeing feeling to know exactly how much money we have.   We try to plan out everything that is happening that month and we truly do spend every dollar we have on paper before the month begins.  That’s the key, to make a zero based budget and to stick to it.  If you spend more out of one category you have to take from another category.  Here is a great post that my husband wrote about how to create a zero based budget, READ NOW.

I highly recommend that if you are married that you do your budget – TOGETHER – it’s so important for couples to be on the same page with their money, otherwise how in the world can you stick to it?  Also, if budgeting, especially with a zero based budget is new to you, then I highly recommend checking out Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University books and courses.  Better yet, enroll in a class near you – you will get so much more out of it if you do the course with a small group of like-minded individuals who can hold you accountable.  In fact, we loved the classes so much and loved what they did for our family that we started teaching his classes at our church!  It’s such a fun class to be a part of and to teach!

I’d love to know if you have done Dave Ramsey’s classes and how much debt you paid off in the process!  Share your stories of success or even frustration in the comments below.

Hugs!

Dave Ramsey did not ask me to write this post about his courses or books.  All opinions are mine.

Dump Salad Recipe

Dump Salad Recipe

Yeah, ok, so this may sound gross, but it’s a super delicious salad!  I like to call this my Dump Salad because it’s loaded dumpSaladwith wholesome goodies that are also leftovers from several other dinners cooked last week!  :) You must try this and let me know what you think!

Dump Salad:

  • Red or Green leaf lettuce – washed and ready to eat
  • 2 slices of crispy Bacon
  • Crispy chunks of cooked red potatoes
  • Blue Cheese chunks
  • Sliced Tomatoes
  • Avocado slices
  • 1 Hard-boiled egg
  • Bacon Dressing

Bacon Dressing:  This is super easy to make – I like to cook my bacon slices on a roaster pan with slats in my oven so all the bacon drippings drip to the bottom pan.  After I cook the bacon I reserve all the drippings and pour them into a sauce pan and add a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar and crumble 1 slice of bacon into the mixture.  Heat until it boils and you are done! It’s amazing and tastes so good on the salad.  A little goes a LONG way too!20150901_121351

The salad is super easy to throw together, especially if you have made some of the other items days earlier for other recipes.  I like to use bacon in a lot of recipes, so I’ll cook up a whole package and try to use the rest throughout the week when I need an extra crunch.  We also keep a lot of hard-boiled eggs on hand for the whole week to grab as a quick protein packed snack and my kids love them in their lunches.  The red potatoes are a regular side item in our house for dinners, so I just usually make a little extra any time I make them so we can use them in this salad, or as a side along with scrambled eggs for breakfast in the morning.  When all these things are on hand, this is a really easy lunch salad to throw together!

Keep in mind, you can “dump” other things on this salad from your leftovers, some sliced chicken, or ham, might be really nice.  You can also experiment with different cheeses, like feta and maybe some olives and pepperoni slices would be yummy as well.  There are so many ways you can go with this idea of a Dump Salad, so have fun and experiment!

Hope you love it as much as I do!  Try it out and let me know what you think, and let me know if you made any substitutions!  I’d love to know what combination of ingredients you like best!  Hugs!

Health Quest – 5 Month Update

Health Quest – 5 Month Update

20150806_081743I thought I would take a few minutes to give you all a quick update on my Health Quest!  I posted a personal status update yesterday after a trip to the doc and it generated a lot of buzz, so I figured I better let you all know the same great news.  I went to my general practitioner yesterday for my yearly physical and the sweet nurse who did my vitals gave me some great news.  You all know what’s is like to walk down the dreaded long hallway to the scale…right?? Well, I hopped right on that scale and she told me that I’d lost 20.5lbs since March!  WAHOO!!!  I had been in to the doc in March when I had a terrible head cold that I could not shake – which was right before we started our Whole30 journey!  So, I’m happy to say that in as little as 5 months I’ve lost 20.5lbs and I’m stoked!  Pretty cool I think!  We are still sticking with a lot of ideas we learned during our Whole30 journey and it’s clearly working out great for us!  We are not nearly as strict, but I’ve learned a lot of things about my body in the last couple years and even just in the last 5 months that I know are truths for me.  If I do one thing I will achieve the same result – every time.  For example, even though I love a crusty piece of sourdough bread, I know without a doubt now that if I eat it I will get a headache and it will add weight to my body.  I don’t always make the best choices, but at least I know going in what my consequences will be.

Besides eating better, I’m making strides with my feet issues.  Lately I have been able to run a lot more, which I can tell is increasing my metabolism – and we all know that the more you run or exercise the easier it becomes and the more SA_cover_295x448enjoyable it is.  I love running – but it’s hard to do – it’s not easy and even though I love it, I hate it just as much – especially when I’m smack dab in the middle of a workout and it’s 90 degrees outside (it’s been really hot here lately).  But I love how it makes me feel afterwards – even if it’s only 2 miles!  I also love the all-natural, sugar-free products I’m using now – AXIO for energy and Protandim for overall body function and recovery – both make a HUGE difference in being able to go for a 2-3mile run EVERY day!  Before I started using these products I could not run every day – my body hurt too bad after a run to keep up – I would need a day in between to recover (even from a small run).  Now, I’m good to go every day and sometimes even twice a day.  I’m feeling a HUGE energy increase – which if you have read my blog for awhile, you know the biggest issue I faced a couple years ago was being so incredibly tired all the time.  In fact, if you are interested and in learning more about Protandim and how it activates Nrf2 and helps to slow the natural aging process in your body, you should read an eBook I wrote all about it – it’s pretty cool stuff!  I’m giving away this eBook FREE to all my loyal readers.  You can download it here, now.  Let me know what you think of it!

Someone asked me recently to put up my Top 10 List of Getting Healthy tips, so here you go:

Katrina’s Top 10 List to Get Healthy:

  1. Do a Whole30 Challenge – (you can read all my posts about my Whole30 challenge – read now).
  2. Limit white flour and refined sugar.
  3. Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
  4. Find a form of exercise you love and get MOVING! (running, dancing, yoga, spinning, biking, walking..etc).
  5. Take an all-natural Nrf2 activating supplement – like Protandim.
  6. Limit your sugary drinks – replace with an all-natural Nrf2 activating drink like AXIO.  (I still drink AXIO first thing each morning and it does so much more for my mood and mental focus than coffee ever did! – BUT, I still have a cup of coffee with my girlfriends every now and then).
  7. Enter an exercise challenge group – sign up for a race, or enter a losing weight challenge at your gym – anything to boost your motivation to get moving.
  8. Exercise with your kids – play with them at the park, go for walks and bike rides, sign up for a family race!
  9. Create a list of go-to, easy, healthy recipes and keep those staples on hand so you always have what you need to create a quick, healthy family dinner.
  10. Find an amazing chiropractor, use them regularly, and give acupuncture a try! I love mine – Dr. Carrie Wolf of Wolf Chiropractic in Parker, CO!  If you go see her, tell her I sent you!

My big bad medical degree told me to tell you all of that!  :)  Kidding (no medical degree for me – I have an art degree), that’s just what I’ve learned lately.

Well, that’s about it!  Hugs!

Katrina’s Coupon Tip #11 – Why I Use Self-Checkout

Katrina’s Coupon Tip #11 – Why I Use Self-Checkout

Do you use thrylyn_selfcheckoute self-checkout lane at the grocery store?  If you haven’t already discovered the power of the self-checkout lane at your favorite grocery store then you are missing out!  I love using the self-checkout lane for many reasons, but mostly because I can control the transaction and make sure that everything is ringing up properly. You would be amazed at how many items you purchase that ring up incorrectly.  There is power in using the self-checkout lane because you can question any item or price that you feel is wrong!

It’s also nice that you can scan your own coupons and can make sure that each one is deducting and doubling correctly. Be careful, because a lot of stores have item limits for their self-checkout lanes, so make sure you check before beginning your transaction!

Also, if you are anything like me and you allow your kids to shop with you, then using the self-checkout lanes means they can help you scan items!  Yes, this can get a bit crazy, but if you are patient it can be really fun!

Homemade Table Top Tiki Torch Fire Pit

Homemade Table Top Tiki Torch Fire Pit

TikiTorchI had the pleasure of creating a really fun craft project this afternoon – a Table Top Tiki Torch Fire Pit!  This was a really fun project!  A couple months ago our family enjoyed a fun summer bbq at a friend’s house and we made smores (and let me tell you, I LOVE smores – I have no idea why, especially because I’m a not a huge fan of marshmallows, but they are soooo heavenly to me – they rate second only to brownies in my book, and for those of you who know me or have been reading my blog for a long time – you know I LOVE brownies more than anything) with a flower pot charcoal fire pit.  My friend told me that she found the idea on…you guessed it…Pinterest.  It was a blast – and I literally was kicking myself for not thinking of it sooner!  So, when I got home that same night I stayed up way to late pinning homemade fire pits – you can see all the neat ideas I found on my Pinterest page – All these great ideas led me to create a similar version of my own!  I really liked the idea of the tiki torch as the flame because it was quick and easy and didn’t need to heat up for a long time.  Plus I really liked the modern look of the semi-buried torches with decorative rocks as the accent.

Supplies I needed to find:

  • Big metal or ceramic flower potTikiTorch2
  • Sand
  • Tiki torch canisters
  • Tiki torch fuel
  • Decorative rocks

I decided to start pricing out my supplies and this is when I got bummed.  Although none of the supplies were super pricey, once I added it all up, we were talking close to about $100 if I bought everything brand new.  Time to move on to Plan B.  I looked around the house to see what I could find that I already had on hand and I found an old stainless steel flower pot that was just sitting on the shelf in my garage.  Then I asked around on a couple free Facebook groups for used tiki torch canisters and ended up finding 4 of them – FREE! Over the next couple weeks as I went to local garage sales, I found a couple different bags of decorative rocks for 50 cents!  Score again!  I still needed sand and remembered that I have a big sand box in the backyard - FREE sand!  The only thing I needed to go out and purchase was tiki fuel – which cost only $5.40 for a big bottle!  So for less than $6 I made a great table top tiki torch fire pit and we had a great time tonight roasting smores!

Would love to see what you come up with!  Post a picture of your homemade fire pit on my Katrina’s World Facebook page of your own homemade fire pit!

Katrina’s Homemade Granola

Katrina’s Homemade Granola

Nothing tastes better in the morning, or mid-afternoon, or even a late night snack than a hearty bowl of homemade granola!  For some of the ingredients I’m a bit spoiled because my father-in-law brings me the BEST local, raw honey from Montana when he comes out for a visit and it’s TASTY!  I make all sorts of different versions of granola based off what ingredients I have in my pantry at the time, but here is my basic go-to recipe:

granola2

Katrina’s Homemade Granola

  • 2 cartons of any type of oats – 180z each
  • 1 cup of peanuts
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup cranberries
  • 1/2 coconut
  • 1/3 cup chia seed
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup local, raw honey
  • 2 cups natural peanut butter

Combine all the dry ingredients and stir with a big spoon in a large bowl.  Mix the wet ingredients in a different bowl and Igranola3 like to heat it up in the microwave for 30 seconds, it helps them mix up better.  Then stir the wet ingredients in with the dry ingredients.  I like to use my hands to mix it up well!  Then pour into 2-4 bar pans and bake for 30 mins at 375 degrees.  Make sure to stir your granola after it has cooked for 15mins.  Once baked, let sit out until it completely cools.  I then put my granola in a big cereal tupperware bin I have.  This makes a decent amount of granola – but for my family of 5, it usually lasts about 2 weeks at the most!  Makes for a great breakfast meal or for a snack!

You could also subsititute the honey with apple juice, or even orange juice – but it won’t come out as sweet.  I’ve added chocolate chips by the handful (after it’s cooked of course) for a sweet treat late at night, and I’ve also used different types of nuts like cashew, walnuts, etc.  You can leave out the coconut, but I love how it tastes.  I like to use the big shreds of it that I found at Sprouts (which has not added sugar).

Enjoy!

Have You Ever Wanted To Be An Entrepreneur?

Have You Ever Wanted To Be An Entrepreneur?

Have you ever wanted to be an entrepreneur?  If your answer is no, I totally understand – I never wanted to be riskone either!  Now, does that surprise you?  It should – especially if you have read my blog and know that I’m a huge business person.  There is a difference in loving the art of business and actually being an entrepreneur.

Entrepreneur: a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.

Did you read the part that said considerable risk?  Ok, stop everything right now – know this about me – I’m a WIMP!!!  A huge wimp.  It’s actually sort of funny because I have no problem talking to anyone, or being up on stage commanding a crowd, or leading a huge group of people to do some task – but when it comes to any sort of risk, I wimp out – big time!  Funny the way God made us huh?  The risk-taking part of being an entrepreneur is the hardest part for me and the biggest hurdle for me to cross.  But, I’ll admit, I have all the other parts covered – I love to organize, manage, and take initiative – and those three things outweigh my fear of risk and that’s why I’m an entrepreneur!

If you want to be an entrepreneur and have no idea where to start – I’ll tell you one thing, you already have crossed a big hurdle – desire - dreaming of more!  At the heart of every entrepreneur is a dream of more and that is a great place to start!  If you find yourself dreaming about firing your boss, or dreaming of having more time to spend with your family, or simply dreaming of having more income coming into your household, then it’s time to get started!  Being an entrepreneur doesn’t have to be overly complicated – simply decide it’s time to do something.   Figure out your strengths and limitations, and then start considering your options.

For example, you might be a stay-at-home-mom like me and dream of making some extra income for your household to pay bills and maybe save a little for a newer used car.  You know you are good at sewing and cooking, but you also know your time is limited because you have young kids.  You realize that a lot of people need their clothes tailored or mended and you decide to start an in-home sewing/tailoring business for your friends and neighbors, that you can do a couple hours a day Are You An Entrepreneurwhen your kids are napping – and tadaa – an entrepreneur is born!  It’s really that simple!  It just takes some desire, passion, purpose and a drive to go for it!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas!  If you have any questions – comment and I’ll try to help as best I can!

I recently posted a video of my journey to becoming an entrepreneur – if you didn’t get a chance to watch it yet, you can now - WATCH NOW.
