Not Getting Results with the Ketogenic Diet?

Hi.   Thanks for stopping by.   Ketosis, the Ketogenic diet, and Ketones have been known about for quite some time however only recently have some of the benefits become known.

 

What are Ketones and what is Ketosis?

When thinking of the body’s natural and primary fuel source, sugar (glucose) usually comes to mind.  We realize that our body uses sugar as a fuel, but what many of us don’t realize is that fats can be an even better fuel source to the body. The process of Ketosis is our body’s ability to use fats as its main energy source, over glucose (sugar).  When the body burns fat, it produces three bi-products of fat called Ketones.  This occurs naturally and is what allows our body to survive when low on food .  When someone starts following a low carbohydrate diet, the body has to find a fuel source besides glucose so it turns to fatty acids and fat stores for energy.

 

What are some benefits of a Ketogenic diet?

  • Weight Loss and Blood Sugar Balance – Ketones have been found to improve insulin sensitivity, normalize blood sugar levels, and slow food cravings.  Due to the increased level of feeling full, you just eat when hungry rather than focusing on eating at certain times of the day and counting calories which is beneficial for weight loss.
  • Boost in energy levels and athletic performance – Often referred to as a “super fuel”, Ketones help with better blood flow and appear to enhance our “energy powerhouse” (mitochondria) which leads to improved oxygen capacity.

Besides the weight loss effects and better energy and muscle performance, Ketones have also been positively associated with:

  • Migraine treatment
  • Neuro-protective benefits in seizure disorders;
  • Better Moods
  • Stroke prevention and improved cholesterol levels
  • Autism and improved behaviour

 

Unfortunately, for many of us, it’s very difficult to keep our body in a state of Ketosis just from trying to eat a Ketogenic diet.   Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to achieve Ketosis without having to adhere to such a strict diet?
